I remember growing up and being forced to go to church a few times.  It was too early, and I wasn’t interested because all it seemed to do was put me to sleep!  I struggled to stay awake while my mom and grandmother sat there waiting to nudge me everytime I dozed off :-)    They gave up, and we all quit going.

As a child, I was relieved: my bed was much more comfortable.  In large part, I was to blame for not being prepared for church, but it would have helped if the message had not felt like a funeral service each week.  The pastor was a good man, but as a young fellow, I needed some entertainment as well.  The solemn hymns were more like lullabyes than worship for the God of everything!  Then came the pastor message with that calm, monotone voice that finished me off every single time!  I just couldn’t help it no matter what I tried.  I was only six or seven at the time, but I wasn’t blind – many adults were “catching Z’s” too!

Why were they in the same boat as a first grader??  Perhaps lack of sleep, lack of understanding, lack of will to be there, but often it is due to a lack of life in the church.  I mean, who wants to feel like they’re sitting in a funeral home each Sunday?  Many churches are so solemn and ritualistic that we dread going.  Consequently, we are taught that God is solemn and ritualistic, but that’s not true. Don’t let “religion” misrepresent your Lord!

This lack of life often leads to a much greater lack of life in those churches – lack of the Holy Spirit.  When you go to church, is it in hope of hearing another boring message, or is it in hope of learning about and meeting with Jesus?  Have you noticed that in these boring services, it seems that God seldom shows up?  The God of miracles who created the earth is not boring and He shows up when His children eagarly seek Him and show their love and thankfulness for Him through overflowing, inviting worship for Him!  Calling on the Holy Spirit brings the living God to share His presence with you.  Churches that don’t embrace the Holy Ghost don’t know what they are missing.  Instead of a funeral home, they could be having a weekly block party!!

Understand that ”religion” often unknowingly misrepresents God; you need to KNOW God personally for yourself!  As my Pastor says, God is a party animal.  Once you meet the life of the party, your life will never be the same.
